Update – Use Amazon Alexa Guard

Alexa Guard can serve as a micro security system, it can listen for breaking glass, alert you to smoke alarms, turn your lights on and off and inform you of other breach in your home.

If an Amazon Echo hears a window break, it can send you an alert to your phone along with a live video feed if you have an Echo with a camera on it, like the Echo Show. An alert includes a 10-second audio recording of the glass breaking and anything else the Echo heard.

It will also send a smoke alarm in event of fire or something burnig or carbon monoxide emission. Depending on your configuration choice Amazon Guard can automatically turn on smart lights at certain times while you’re away, and it will automatically turn them on and off on a schedule as if you’re home. Once enabled, you activate by telling Alexa “I’m leaving” and de-activate by saying “I’m home.”

Alexa Guard isn’t a monitored security system. Amazon spells that out multiple times in its FAQ:

The Alexa app is the companion app that allows you to monitor all alexa’s activities. It  is available in Apple App StoreGoogle Play, and Amazon Appstore. The app can be used by owners of Alexa-enabled devices to install skills, control music, manage alarms, and view shopping lists.

Alexa Guard is not a replacement for an alarm system or life safety device and cannot contact emergency services, such as the police or fire department, on your behalf. Smart Alerts are provided for informational purposes only.

If you subscribe to ADT or use Amazon’s Ring alarm system, Guard can automatically send alerts to professionals so that authorities arrive if a break-in is detected. Meanwhile, If you don’t have these systems, Alexa Guard won’t call the police, it’ll just notify you of a potential break-in.
